Excursion tour which combines Etna's southern flank's volcanic history and its natural catastrophies. From Nicolosi, the town thought to be the doorway to Etna, going up to Stazione sud (1995m a.s.l) Crossing Monti Rossi, the eruptive fissure which led to the important 1669 eruption, which covered the towns on Etna's southern flank, even reaching Catania. Going across the plateau where the 2001 lava stopped and a series of switchbacks crossing the evocative 1983 lava flow, with fabulous phototaking opportunities.

The experience

Excursion tour which combines Etna's southern flank's volcanic history and its natural catastrophies. From Nicolosi, the town thought to be the doorway to Etna, going up to Stazione sud (1995m a.s.l) Crossing Monti Rossi, the eruptive fissure which led to the important 1669 eruption, which covered the towns on Etna's southern flank, even reaching Catania. Going across the plateau where the 2001 lava stopped and a series of switchbacks crossing the evocative 1983 lava flow, with fabulous phototaking opportunities. The first hike will be from Piano Vettore (1735m a.s.l.) along the 'Monte Nero degli Zappini' nature trail , a first chance to know Etna's most important volcanic and botanic features, amid various lava flows, hornitos, lava caves and Etna's endemic plants. Going by minibus to Stazione Sud, a place which has often been marked by recent eruptions. The second hike will be along all the 1892 eruptive fissure, which the Silvestri craters(2000m a.s.l.) originated from. Going down by minibus towards the town of Zafferana Etnea, where we will stop to visit the Cassone Cave, a perfect example of a lava tunnel. Then, before getting to Zafferana Etnea, another stop to see the effects of the 1991-93 eruption, which seriously threatened the town. The second trekking will cross the entire eruptive fracture from 1892, which formed the so called "bottoniera" of the Sylvester Crater at 2000 m.a.s.l. During the trip by minibus to the town of Zafferana Entea, we will stop again to visit the inside of the Grotta Cassone, an example of lava tunnel. Before arriving at Zafferana Etnea, you will stop again to observe the effects of the eruption occurred in 1991-93, which seriously threaten the town below. Tasting of honey, olive oil and wines from the place. In wintertime, we provide ski poles that may help you. Difficulty level: easy Period: all year round. Elevation gain: 100 m. Elevation loss: 100 m. Hiking time: about 4 hours.

The price includes a box breakfast. In wintertime we provide ski poles that may help you.
Details and information: The tour takes place all year long on Tuesdays, from about 9 am to 18 pm. The pick-up service (two way) is possible from and to all accommodations facilities in the towns of: Catania city, Misterbianco, Mascalucia, Gravina di Catania, S.Giovanni La Punta, Tremestieri etneo, Aci Castello, Aci Trezza, Pedara, San Gregorio di Catania, Trecastagni, Sant'Agata li Battiati, Zafferana Etnea, Santa Venerina, Viagrande, Valverde, Nicolosi. Collection points are: Catania Central Station, Zafferana Etnea (central square), highway exit Giarre on the A 18 Messina/Catania. Participants are kindly requested to write down during the purchase the name and the address of their accommodation or the name of the collection point they wish to be picked up at in the provided spaces. We will pick you up from 9 am. We will inform you by telephone about the rough collection time. We recommend you to leave a valid phone number, otherwise you will be informed only by e-mail. The collection times, departure and return times are subject to changes depending on external factors. Please make sure you arrive at the collection point on time: the minibus will leave exactly 15 minutes after the estimated collection time. What to wear: We recommend layered clothing that is ideal for all weather conditions. Optional equipment: windcheater, hiking shoes, backpack containing rain-jacket and rain-pants, water-bottle, sunscreen, hat, batteries, eventually a change of clothes that you can leave in the minibus. The service doesn't include: whatever not specified under Service.

Accomplishments and additional options: This tour is strongly not recommended for people suffering from cardiovascular diseases or for people who are not physically and mentally fit to participate in the excursion. Participants are aware of the risks that can be associated with the participation in the activity and are asked to sign a disclaimer of liability (see form on our Website) as a necessary condition for taking part in the tour. Cancellations are permitted until 24 hours before departure. Students may be asked to produce appropriate documents attesting their status. The tour can be adapted and/or canceled following the unappealable decision of the organizer barring exceptional circumstances such as: bad weather conditions, alteration of the state of roads, rock-falls, landslides, flooding on a part or on the total area of the paths, bad medical conditions of one or more participants, unfavourable volcanic conditions. In the above-mentioned cases, the organizer does not refund the Clients owing to partial or total changes to the services. Clients will be able to arrange a new excursion date directly with the organizer without additional charges.
