Read moreThe ascent to Mount Etna’s summit craters is one of the most sought-after experiences for trekking enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
You will be accompanied by a certified alpine/volcanological guide, who will help you discover the impressive beauty of the highest active volcano in Europe, crossing lunar landscapes, lava flows, and unique volcanic environments.
The tour starts from Rifugio Sapienza (1,900 m) in Nicolosi. A cable car takes you up to 2,500 m, where the actual trekking begins.
Route up to 3,000 m: For this option, the itinerary continues on foot across the 2001 lava flow until reaching the Barbagallo Craters at 3,000 m. From here, you can admire the impressive summit area and observe volcanic activity up close in complete safety. The descent passes by the 2002 craters, along volcanic ash slopes, with a visit to a lava flow tunnel, before returning by cable car.
Route up to 3,400 m (Summit Craters): For those choosing the summit trek, after the cable car you will continue by 4x4 vehicles up to about 2,850 m, the starting point of the hike to the summit craters. After around two hours of walking across volcanic sand and recent lava flows, you will reach the central crater area, walking along the rim between La Voragine and Bocca Nuova. The route continues towards the South-East Crater, one of the most active in recent eruptions, offering spectacular views over the Valle del Bove. The descent follows sandy slopes down to about 3,000 m, before returning towards the cable car.Meeting Times
