Pantalica is a unique area where nature and history come together in one of the most remarkable ways in Sicily. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Pantalica Nature Reserve features an impressive system of limestone canyons (locally known as “cave”) that enclose crystal-clear streams, lush riverside vegetation, and steep cliffs dotted with around 5,000 rock-cut tombs. These elements blend with the vibrant Mediterranean scrub, creating what is considered the largest necropolis in Europe.
A fascinating trail carved into the rock leads visitors through ancient pre-Hellenic settlements, Byzantine citadels, and the route of an old railway, passing by stunning natural pools surrounded by rich vegetation. At the end of the excursion, there is a pleasant stop in Sortino, where local shops offer the chance to taste the artisanal honey produced in this Hyblaean region.
A unique adventure to discover Pantalica, that really represents the area of Sicily where the union between 'nature and history' is clearly made real. Evocative limestone canyons ('cave' in local dialect) hide endless clearwater streams, lush river vegetation and vertical rockfaces dotted with some 5000 tombs carved into the rock that can be found amid the varied Mediterranean craggy bush vegetation: thus describing in a few words the largest European necropolis, recently listed as a UNESCO site.
A beautiful path carved into the rock will lead you to visit ancient pre-Hellenic and Byzantine settlements and the old railway route, alongside idyllic bodies of water surrounded by lush vegetation.
