Archeological trekking among windmills and castles

We will take you in the Sicilian backcountry in Enna municipality to discover through guided itineraries ancient windmills and castles on the Erei Mountains.

You will be able to choose among 3 marked itineraries characterized by different levels of difficulty:

WINDMILL PATH - EASY

one of the less renowned corners of the Erei Mountains: Fundrò and the Furma Valley. You will be in a unique places, from a naturalistic and archeological point of view, within the Rocca di Cerere Geopark. Following the visit of the Abbey, you will find the remains of ancient water mills that were used to mill wheat. Together with your guide you will follow the banks of the torrent Furma, a very interesting water stream that to these days does not show any form of pollution and presents a very interesting riparian environment.

Itinerary lenght: 7 km

ROSSOMANNO - MEDIUM

You will begin your excursion by heading towards the hills where once was the village of Rossomanno which gives the name to the mountain itself. You will visit the Trovato necropolis, Cozzo Siracusa and the byzantine church until you reach several ruins "Castellaccio degli Uberti" and "cunvintazzo". You will then head over towards the "enchanted stones" or "pupi ballerini", some spectacular stuctures made of sandstones. These stones, according to some local legends, are dancers that were punished and petrified by some mysterious sorcery. The view from this path is simply incredible and stretches from the Madonie to the Altopiano Ibleo. Finally, you will descend towards the Grottascura Valley, walk across the green heart of the natural reserve heading back to your starting point.

CASTLE OF PIETRATAGLIATA - HARD

A magnificent crest almost perpendicular to the Gresti torrent creates a natural barrier. On the top of the crest, nestled as a precious stone, there is the norman castle. In this excursion you will follow the Gresti torrent where some enormous rocks have severed from the mountain and falling along the course of the river and creating a very cinematographic environment and certainly a very adventurous itinerary. Reached the bootom of the hill, where the rock falls into the torrent, you will be able to admire the "Gurna", a very deep pool of pernnial water capable to survive also to the summer droughts. You will spend a day immersed in one of the most peculiar corners of the sicilian backcountry in an itinerary linking nature and history in this remote corner of Sicily.

During the excursion you will take a lunch break and on a second pause you will be offered coffee and a dessert.

While reserving your activity you can add a packed lunch as an extra.
